Sustainability at Fraoch Lodge
At Fraoch Lodge, we’re deeply committed to responsible tourism and minimising our environmental impact. Nestled in the Cairngorms National Park—a place of outstanding natural beauty—we believe it’s our duty to protect the landscape, wildlife, and community we call home.
Here are the steps we take every day to operate as sustainably as possible:
Eco-Conscious Accommodation
- Low-impact living: Our lodge is insulated for energy efficiency, and we heat the property using a biomass boiler, and 2 modern wood-burning stoves.
- Energy conservation: LED lighting is used throughout the building, and we encourage mindful use of water, heat, and power.
- Drying room efficiency: Our drying room is powered efficiently to support outdoor adventures without unnecessary energy waste.
Locally Sourced, Homegrown Food
- Homegrown produce: Many herbs, vegetables, and fruits used in our meals come from our on-site garden.
- Local suppliers: We prioritise buying from local producers, reducing food miles and supporting the local economy.
- Homemade meals: Most of our food is made from scratch—minimising packaging and avoiding processed goods.
Minimising Waste
- Recycling & composting: We recycle paper, plastics, metals, and glass. Organic waste is composted for use in our garden.
- Reusable packaging: Packed lunches are provided in reusable containers and we avoid single-use plastics wherever possible.
- Refill stations: Guests are encouraged to refill water bottles—no need for bottled water here.
Supporting Car-Free Travel
- Train-friendly travel: We actively encourage guests to arrive by public transport. For guests with Scot Mountain Holidays, station pick up is provided
- Bike storage: Secure bike storage and basic repair tools are available for cyclists.
- Walking & public transport advice: Many activities start from our door, and we’re happy to help plan car-free days out.
Nature-Friendly Practices
- Leave no trace ethos: We promote low-impact outdoor exploration and provide guests with guidance on respecting local wildlife and trails.
- Wildlife conservation: We work in partnership with local conservation organisations and share knowledge about local flora and fauna.
- Eco-cleaning products: We use environmentally friendly cleaning products throughout the lodge.
Supporting the Local Community
- Employment & partnerships: We work with local guides, instructors, and small businesses to provide experiences and services.
- Local experiences: Our guests are introduced to authentic Highland culture, crafts, and cuisine.
- Give-back ethos: A portion of our business income supports community and environmental initiatives in the Cairngorms.
