A Week in the Cairngorms – Without Climbing a Munro
Think of the Scottish Highlands and it’s easy to picture soaring mountain summits and challenging hikes. But what if we told you that you can enjoy an unforgettable week in the Cairngorms without climbing a single Munro?
From Fraoch Lodge, you’re perfectly placed to discover some of the Highlands’ most beautiful landscapes, fascinating history and iconic attractions—all while enjoying gentle walks, cosy cafés and spectacular scenery.
Day 1 – A Scenic Journey North
If you’re travelling from Edinburgh, make the journey part of your holiday. Break the drive with a walk to the beautiful Falls of Bruar before enjoying lunch at House of Bruar. By the time you arrive at Fraoch Lodge, you’ll already have had your first taste of Highland scenery.
Day 2 – Rivers, Coast and Whisky
Start the day with a peaceful walk through Logie Steading and along the Dorback Burn to the Salmon Leap. After lunch, head to the wide sandy beach at Findhorn for a stroll beside the Moray Firth before finishing the day with a tour of Benromach Distillery in Forres.
Day 3 – Wildlife and Ancient Forest
Spend the morning exploring the Highland Folk Museum before heading to Rothiemurchus Estate for a woodland walk or cycle beneath ancient Scots pines. As evening falls, settle into a Speyside Wildlife Hide, where you might spot pine martens, badgers and other nocturnal visitors.

Day 4 – Royal Deeside
Take in the magnificent pinewoods of Ballochbuie before visiting Balmoral Castle and Estate. Afterwards, enjoy a wander around Ballater’s independent shops and cafés before returning to Fraoch Lodge for a relaxing evening.
Day 5 – Speyside Stories
Discover the centuries-old craft of coopering, walk a beautiful stretch of the Speyside Way beside the River Spey and browse the historic Knockando Woolmill. If you’re a whisky enthusiast, don’t miss a visit to the Whisky Castle in Tomintoul.

Day 6 – Highland History
Explore Blair Castle before stretching your legs on the beautiful Birks of Aberfeldy walk. If your visit coincides with one of the area’s traditional Highland Games, it’s a wonderful opportunity to experience Highland culture at its most colourful.
Day 7 – Battles, Castles and Loch Ness
Round off your stay with a visit to Culloden Battlefield and the impressive fortress at Fort George before continuing to the shores of Loch Ness. A gentle walk along part of the Great Glen Way is the perfect finale before enjoying one last Highland meal.
