The Cairngorms National Park is one of the best walking destinations in Scotland. While the area is famous for its high mountains and challenging hikes, there are also many easy and scenic walks that showcase the beauty of the Cairngorms without requiring a full day in the hills.

Guests staying at Fraoch Lodge in Boat of Garten are ideally placed to explore some of the most beautiful forest trails, lochs and gentle walking routes in the national park. Many of these walks are just a short drive away and are perfect for a relaxed morning or afternoon outdoors.

Here are five of our favourite easy walks in the Cairngorms that offer wonderful scenery, wildlife and a real sense of the Highlands.

1. Loch an Eilein

One of the most beautiful short walks in the Cairngorms is the circular path around Loch an Eilein, located on the Rothiemurchus Estate near Aviemore.

At the centre of the loch sits a small island topped by the ruins of a 13th-century castle, creating one of the most photographed views in the national park.

Why it’s special

The trail winds through ancient Caledonian pine forest, with frequent views across the loch to the castle ruins. The path is well maintained and suitable for most walkers.

2. Ryvoan Pass

The Ryvoan Pass walk is a classic Cairngorms route connecting Glenmore with Abernethy Forest. It’s slightly longer than some forest walks but still accessible for most reasonably fit walkers.

The route passes through ancient pine forest before climbing gently to An Lochan Uaine, also known as the “Green Lochan” because of its distinctive colour.

Distance: 7 km return
Time: 2–3 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Highlights

3. Uath Lochans

The Uath Lochans trail near Kincraig is one of the hidden gems of the Cairngorms. A network of well-maintained paths leads visitors through peaceful woodland to a series of small lochs and viewpoints.

Despite being easy to reach, this area is often much quieter than other popular spots.
