Their seasonal dishes often feature local game and root veg, which taste all the better after a brisk walk back from the forest. And if you don’t fancy moving far at all, it’s simply the easiest place for that “first pint of the holiday.”
2. The Old Bridge Inn, Aviemore
The Old Bridge Inn has become a bit of a legend in these parts, and for good reason. Tucked along the River Spey, it’s the kind of place where you can lose hours by the fire without realising. After an autumn day spent up on the hill, stepping inside to find live music drifting through the room or a plate of slow-cooked venison being carried past is pure comfort. This is the place where you’re welcomed in no matter how windswept you look after a day outside. There’s usually a fire going, the portions are hearty, and the conversations are cheerful. It’s the kind of pub that feels rooted in its community, which makes it a lovely contrast after time spent roaming the quieter trails.
5. The Winking Owl, Aviemore
Known affectionately as “the Winky,” this Aviemore spot offers both warmth and wide views of the Cairngorms. In autumn, the mountains glow red and gold from the upstairs windows, and it’s easy to while away the evening sampling beers from the Cairngorm Brewery. The downstairs bar has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere — ideal if you just want a casual drink after a busy day out exploring.
