10 family adventures near Fraoch Lodge this summer

familiy adentures from Fraoch Lodge

One of the reasons families love staying at Fraoch Lodge is that you don’t have to spend hours in the car to find something to do. Some of our favourite family adventures begin right from the front door, while others are just a short drive away.

Whether your family enjoys cycling, wildlife, water sports or simply spending time outdoors together, the Cairngorms National Park offers enough activities to fill a week or more.

Here are ten of our favourite family adventures for summer.

1. Walk to Loch Vaa

A walk to Loch Vaa is one of the hidden gems of the Cairngorms.

The trail winds through beautiful Scots pine forest before reaching the peaceful loch. On a warm summer day it’s the perfect place for a paddle or even a refreshing swim.

Families with their own equipment often bring paddleboards or inflatable kayaks, while younger children enjoy exploring the shoreline and spotting dragonflies.

Keep your eyes open for bilberries later in the summer and, if you know what you’re looking for, chanterelle mushrooms can sometimes be found in the surrounding woodland.

2. Learn Bike Skills on Our Pump Track

Before tackling bigger trails, why not spend some time practising at Fraoch Lodge?

Our pump track is ideal for building confidence, improving balance and learning bike-handling skills in a safe environment.

Children quickly become hooked on seeing how far they can ride without pedalling, while parents often find themselves joining in too.

Once everyone is feeling confident, you’re ready for some of the best family-friendly cycling in Scotland.

3. Explore the Glenlivet Mountain Bike Trails

The Glenlivet Bike Trails offer something for almost every level of rider.

The easier routes are perfect for adventurous families, while more experienced riders can tackle the longer and more technical trails.

One of the highlights for many children is the fantastic zip wire nearby, providing an extra thrill after a morning on the bikes.

Pack a picnic and make a full day of it.

4. Walk from Glenmore to the Green Lochan

This short walk delivers far more than its distance suggests.

The Green Lochan sits amongst the pines beneath the northern slopes of the Cairngorm Mountains and is famous for its emerald-coloured water.

It’s a manageable adventure for younger children while still offering the kind of scenery that adults will appreciate.

Bring a camera — you’ll want one.

5. Canoe or Sail on Loch Morlich

Few places in Scotland combine mountains, forest and a sandy beach quite like Loch Morlich.

During summer, families can hire canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and sailing equipment, or simply spend the day on the beach.

The shallow water near the shore makes it particularly appealing for younger children, while older family members can head out onto the loch for a bigger adventure.

6. Cycle Through Rothiemurchus Forest

Rothiemurchus Estate offers miles of family-friendly cycling.

Wide forest tracks, peaceful woodland scenery and plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting make this one of our favourite cycling destinations.

For a longer outing, continue towards Loch an Eilean, one of the most photographed locations in the Cairngorms, where a ruined island castle sits reflected in the water.

7. Meet the Highland Cattle and Red Deer

No visit to the Highlands feels complete without seeing some iconic Scottish animals.

Rothiemurchus is home to Highland cattle with their distinctive shaggy coats and impressive horns, as well as herds of red deer.

Children are often fascinated by seeing these animals up close and learning about their role in the Highland landscape.

8. Join Our Catch and Cook Day Out

For families looking for a truly memorable experience, our Catch and Cook day combines outdoor adventure with fantastic local food. (Contact us for full details. Only available to guests at Fraoch Lodge.)

Spend time learning about fishing, the local environment and where food comes from before enjoying the satisfaction of cooking and eating your catch.

It’s an experience that many children remember long after the holiday is over.

9. Spend a Day at Landmark Forest Adventure Park

When you’re looking for a day packed with excitement, Landmark Forest Adventure Park is hard to beat.

There are aerial adventures, water slides, interactive exhibits, forest trails and plenty of opportunities for children to burn off energy.

It’s one of the most popular family attractions in the Highlands for good reason.

10. Wildlife Watching at Loch Garten and Loch Mallachie

The RSPB Nature Centre at Loch Garten is a wonderful introduction to the wildlife of the Cairngorms.

Depending on the season, you may spot ospreys, crested tits, crossbills and a wide variety of other birds.

After visiting the centre, take the easy circular walk around nearby Loch Mallachie. The boardwalk sections and peaceful woodland setting make this a favourite family walk.

Bonus Adventure: Visit the Highland Wildlife Park

If your family would like to see animals from Scotland and around the world, the Highland Wildlife Park makes an excellent day trip.

Highlights include polar bears, snow leopards, Scottish wildcats and many of the species that thrive in mountain environments.

The drive-through reserve is particularly popular with younger visitors.
